About John Poulton and ExamNerves.com
As any good teacher will tell you; real improvement only occurs when students change. It is marvellous when that happens but it is very difficult to bring it about. People change when they are ready to. Intellectual progress is not a gradual upward sloping journey; it is stepped upwards like a staircase. People move along at a constant level then suddenly leap upwards as they experience growth. The seeds of this upward surge are within. The problem is that triggering that growth is a hit and miss affair. In 2006 I was researching Visual, Audio, and Kinaesthetic learning styles as part of my studies for the National Professional Qualification for Headship. Quite unexpectedly my reading led me into the areas of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy. I had a ‘eureka’ moment when I realised the potential impact of these for education. Using techniques developed in NLP and hypnotherapy one could nurture the seeds of personal change. You cannot change people – they have to change themselves. But you can help them to do that, you can speed it up. I realised in 2006 that NLP, and hypnotherapy especially, could strengthen a student’s aspirations and increase their motivation. Many people know this and it’s hardly a unique insight. But it came to me when I could do something about it as a practising teacher. I became a qualified hypnotherapist to learn the techniques that could impact on students. These techniques have been very successful in my own classroom. Exam nerves are an unpleasant experience and they can ruin years of hard study. Researching this I isolated at least nine different causes and these were later narrowed down to five. Adopting approaches from clinical hypnotherapy I developed the MP3s on this site. Each is different and deals with the five situations that may trigger exam nerves. All the other approaches I have come across tend to deal with the general problem of exam stress - not the specific factors that cause it. I am sure such approaches are successful; however, I am equally convinced that my more focussed approach yields deeper, longer lasting, results. Solutions to the condition of exam nerves are the start of our work. Alongside this download site they will be available as a ‘live’ package to schools and colleges later this year. Techniques to raise student aspirations and levels of motivation are currently being developed and will also be offered to schools and colleges later this year along with exam nerves. I invite you to contact us for further details; we can make a positive difference in your school.
